What Is Love?

It’s that month again: February- aka the love month! This is the month that we celebrate Valentine’s day and if you are in a relationship: either married or a long-term relationship, this is the time to buy that perfect gift, plan the most romantic night and show some extra affection to your spouse. If you are single, this is also either the month you don’t really care about or the month you dread the most because it is another year of being alone. Whichever boat you relate to, you are not alone and this is the month of LOVE and there are unique ways for each of us to feel loved and express love!

Have you ever asked the question, “What is Love?”

I asked a handful of people and some people said:

  • “Love is peace”
  • “Love is safe”
  • “Love is a sacrifice”
  • “Love is action”

Many of us have different definitions of “Love” depending on how we were raised by our parents, how we experienced loved from previous relationships, how we show love to others, etc. The Bible speaks so much about LOVE! In fact, in the NIV version, the word love is mentioned

“But God shows his own love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us”

  • Romans 5:8

“Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.”

  • John 15:13

Wow, according to the Bible, while we were still sinners, in our wretched sin, think about your old self, before Christ. For me, this would be when I was still in the world and in rebellion, Christ died for me! He didn’t die for me when I got it all together. I didn’t have to clean up or work towards God’s approval. Instead, Jesus saw me in my sin and He chose to die for me. This is true love. The act of love is that Jesus would lay down His life for His friends.

I don’t know about you but when I reflect on the Cross and Jesus’ sacrifice for me, I can’t help but stand in awe. We are so unworthy, yet Christ loves us.

Now that we understand this love, this Valentine’s day, I challenge you to share this great love to others. To truly love others is to share to them this great news. Let’s make this valentine’s day extra special by thinking of ways that we can share love to our neighbors. How can you share the love of Christ to others this season?
